General worry
It is funny how many times one will see these questions around the different forums. Will I lose my butt? Indeed, people are super obsessed with their butts for some reason 😀
So basically, their major concern is losing weight, but they want to lose it only in specific areas of their body. They want a slimmer face, arms, and obviously a tummy, but they would love to keep their butt and if possible their thighs. Wild, right?
Ugly truth
At least to me, it is. If this is your case, you will have to opt for a different surgery, because bariatric is not for you. With sleeve or bypass, you will lose the weight and it will be your body who will decide where it will start and where it will go away last. Sorry to tell you.
So, the answer is YES! It is 90% likely that your butt will go away, it will disappear into thin air and you will be left with next to nothing 😀 the only exception might be if your butt was “made up” of muscle and not fat. And even in this case, it won’t be the same as before. You will lose some muscle mass as well.
What to do?
What can you do to keep your butt? To tell the truth, nothing much. You will be losing, and in the beginning like crazy, the first weeks I was able to lose a pound a day, so you will feel as if you were melting. The weight will be disappearing at an alarming speed.
The only thing you will be able to do to recover it is start with exercise and torture your butt to build the muscle there. There is no other way. And it will take you months, maybe even a year or two to see some results—ugly truth.
The bones!
The thing that nobody told you before the surgery, and almost everyone will confirm this, is that you will lose so much volume and cushioning on your butt that sitting on something hard will become torture. There is a bone called the coccyx, the rest of the tail our species used to have, that will become your archenemy. It will be literally pinching against the hard thing you are sitting on and it will make you quite uncomfortable.
I have never ever thought that my butt could become this bony. The pelvis is the same. The part that used to be well hidden in your butt under all the muscles and fat, will become more prominent and it won’t be as comfortable as before. No, you won’t have any problem fitting in a chair, and you won’t have to be scared if it will break under you, but at some point, it simply won’t be comfortable 😀
No need to worry
It sounds a little scary. But no, your bones won’t be poking out. Only you will know that this is happening. But regarding poking bones, it is a whole new area that you will learn. I found my collar bones after decades of their disappearance 😀 I have some funny ones on my shoulders, I have a rib cage, my knees are bony as well 😂 omg, and my ankles… they used to be so swollen all the time… and now they are all bones. I love this 😀
Conclusion
So basically, that’s it. You will lose your butt and your thighs. They are made of fat, so it will go away. To have some volume there, you must build it with exercise. There is no other way.
When it will go? It depends. In my case my thighs went away in the first place, followed by my tummy and butt and then arms and the rest of the body. I wasn’t too concerned about this. What was important for me was that I was losing the volume, then the scale number, and that the doctors started to tell me that I was better, that the lab tests were coming back every time better, and that they started to take me off the meds I had been taking for years.
This was a much bigger reward than having a butt. I went from size 48, which is the largest European size in stores, to size 38, which is the second smallest size. I have to tell you that THIS is what counts. I can wear any clothes I like, there is a huge choice of everything.
The extra skin…
The only thing that is a little troublesome is the extra skin. I can’t say I have an extreme amount of it, but yes, my thighs have some. My butt is more or less ok. I have lost about 10 pounds this summer (absolutely effortlessly), so it became a little more visible. Let’s see if I will do something about it in the future. I might get rid of this in case it starts bugging me and it would be uncomfortable. Until then… the extra skin is my badge of honor.
It is worth it
I hope I haven’t talked you out of the surgery. The benefits outweigh the little flaws. It comes within the package. Nothing is perfect. But I would go through this a million times over. My life improved in so many ways that I can’t even count it. Just one to mention was my cardiologist telling me: your heart is perfect, there is no more fat around it, and you are completely healthy, I want to see you in a year for a general checkup. (happy tears)
